When I travel to make a documentary, I don't just film stories — I live them. Every project is not only about capturing moments on camera, but also about stepping into the lives of people, sharing their world, and carrying their stories with me.
In Nepal, I spent two months working on a project. For 37 days, I lived in the village of Giranchaur. It wasn't just about documenting their daily life from the outside — I became part of the community. I learned their language, shared meals, worked alongside them, and slowly, they became a part of me.
That closeness made a big difference. The interviews were not staged conversations. They were honest, raw, and real — because there were no filters, no barriers between us. Trust allowed people to open up in ways that went far beyond what a camera could capture. And with that trust came a responsibility: to share their stories with respect and care.
Leaving was one of the hardest parts. When it was time to say goodbye, there were tears, and the village even organized a small farewell ceremony. It was emotional, powerful, and deeply human. That moment has stayed with me more than any other experience in my filmmaking journey.
Documentary filmmaking has opened doors and hearts for me. It has allowed me to live as part of communities, even if only for a short time, and to connect in ways that transform both the stories I tell and the person I am. But it also comes with a challenge — creating bonds so deep, like family, and then having to walk away.
Yet, that is the beauty of it. You leave a piece of yourself behind, and you take a piece of them with you. The exchange is human, real, and lasting.
This is why I have loved my work as a documentary filmmaker for many years. Beyond the craft and the camera, it is about the human experience — the privilege of being trusted to document lives, and the responsibility of sharing those stories with truth and respect.
