Documentary — Tunisia

Meanwhile in Tunisia

A road trip film by Inès Khannoussi

Cinematographer & Visual Storyteller — Mahdi Khmili

Documentary · 25:43 · Screened at Inncontro Film Festival, Innsbruck

Some projects begin with a brief. Others begin with a conversation.

Meanwhile in Tunisia started with a spontaneous conversation with director Inès Khannoussi about films, documentaries, and the idea of discovering a different side of Tunisia.

A few months later, that idea became a road trip across the country, from north to south. We met people, explored places, and captured stories that rarely make it to television.

I joined the project as the cinematographer and visual storyteller, bringing my experience in filmmaking, visual storytelling, and production to help shape the film from idea to screen. While Inès directed the story and its direction, I focused on translating those encounters, landscapes, and moments into images.

What began as a simple idea eventually became a finished documentary that was screened at several film festivals.

For me, this project is a reminder of what I love about filmmaking: taking an idea that exists only in a conversation and helping turn it into something real, visual, and meaningful.

A conversation. An idea. A road trip. A film.
